What is self advocacy?

Here are some questions to think about:

  • If you were driving your life what would you want?
  • What would you speak up and stand up for?
  • How can we help your friends become self-advocates?
  • How can we help your group?
  • What do you want?

At work, relationships, social / recreational, transportation, at home.


What is Self-Advocacy and why is Self-Advocacy important to you?

  • Be More Involved.
  • Speak up for others that can't speak.
  • Teach people skills to help them make small and big decisions.
  • Self-Advocacy is about working together.
  • Self-Advocacy is about having fun.
  • Being able to communicate what you want.


What does Self-Advocacy means to you?

  • You're not the boss of me.
  • I can stand up for myself.
  • It's important to let people know we're there for them.
  • We can give a voice to what has been unvoiced.
  • We can honor everybody, make everybody count.
  • Standing up for yourself.
  • Belief in yourself and self-awareness.
  • Feeling worthy.
  • Directing your own life.
  • Knowing my voice matters.
  • Voicing your opinion.
  • "Inside job".


Why else is Self-Advocacy important?

  • Without it we will continue to get steamrolled.
  • Other's control your life.
  • Giving voice to everyone.
  • Educate the public.
